IN THIS LESSON

In this lesson I show you how to complete the double crochet, the half treble, and the treble crochet.

If you watched my other videos or read through my written instructions, you might recognize a theme in the way I think about and teach these stitches.
You can think of a double crochet as one step more than a half double and it will be a taller stitch. The half treble is one more step than the double and will also be taller. So forth and so on.

The double crochet is completed by yarning over before going through your stitch, then yarning over and pulling up a loop (3 loops on your hook). Here is where the extra step is, instead of pulling through all 3 loops, you’ll yarn over and pull through 2 loops twice!

The half treble is completed by yarning over twice before you go through your stitch, then yarning over and pulling up a loop. (This creates 4 loops on your hook). You yarn over and pull through 2 once, then yarn over and pull through 3 loops on your hook! I don’t mention this in the video but notice how when you complete a half stitch (half double, half treble,) the last step will be to pull through 3 loops instead of a standard 2 loops, creating the “half” stitch! Therefore, theoretically you could also create a half quadruple stitch as well, though I have personally never seen this in a pattern before.

Finally, if you have caught onto the pattern, the treble is just one more step than the half treble. It is completed the same way as the half treble until you get to 3 loops on your hook. You then yarn over and pull through 2 loops twice! Voila, a treble crochet!

I hope this lesson has been helpful and that my perspective on the patterns and somewhat logical approach to explaining these stitches has helped you to understand and pick up the subtle differences between stitches and chart patterns!

Join me in my next lesson where I show you variations on stitches I’ve already discussed and shown.

Also look forward to a future lesson on how to understand and read chart patterns!

Best of luck and stay crafty, Friends!
